Accord Party Seeks EU Help for Osun Governorship Election

The national leadership of the Accord Party, led by Chief Maxwell Mgbudem, has formally appealed to the European Union for intervention to ensure a transparent and peaceful governorship election in Osun State, set for August 15, 2026. The party expressed deep concerns regarding the escalating political tension in the state, highlighting reports of political violence that have resulted in at least 29 fatalities and numerous injuries.

Additionally, over 60 members and supporters of Accord have reportedly been arrested in Abuja and Nasarawa State under circumstances that require urgent clarification. The letter addressed to the EU emphasized the critical nature of this election for Nigeria's democratic development, particularly as it precedes the 2027 General Election.

It also raised alarms about the perceived politically selective actions of federal law enforcement, including the arrest of senior Osun State officials and the freezing of the state government's bank accounts by the EFCC, which were later unfrozen following public outcry.
