Accord Appeals to EU for Free Osun Governorship Election

The national leadership of Accord, led by Chief Maxwell Mgbudem, has formally requested the European Union's intervention to promote a transparent and peaceful governorship election in Osun State, set for Saturday, August 15, 2026. The letter highlights the critical importance of this election for Nigeria's democratic development, especially as it precedes the 2027 General Election.

Accord expresses deep concern over reports of political violence, intimidation, and the misuse of state institutions, noting that at least 29 individuals have died and many others injured due to the political climate. The party also reports the arrest of over 60 members and supporters in Abuja and Nasarawa State, calling for urgent clarification on these incidents.

Additionally, the freezing of the Osun State Government's bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, followed by a presidential directive to unfreeze them, has raised further concerns about political interference. Accord acknowledges the need for law enforcement to operate without political bias but questions the timing and nature of these actions.
