Activist Soweto Continues Anti-Eviction Fight Amid Trial

Activist Comrad Hassan Taiwo, popularly known as Soweto, has pledged to persist in his anti-eviction campaign following the adjournment of his trial at the Yaba Chief Magistrate's Court to April 24, 2026. The adjournment occurred due to the absence of his co-defendant, Dele Frank, who fell ill and could not attend the court session.

Soweto expressed gratitude to the magistrate for rejecting the prosecutor's request for a bench warrant against Frank, emphasizing that his colleague's illness should not warrant such action. Soweto accused the Lagos State government of politically motivated prosecutions aimed at silencing critics of its demolition policies, which he claims disproportionately affect low-income communities.

He remains committed to opposing the government's actions, asserting that no further demolitions should occur without proper compensation and legal adherence. Soweto is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during a crackdown on protests on January 28, 2026, but maintains his resolve to advocate for equity in society.
