ADC, NNPP, SDP Clash Over 2027 Opposition Ticket Zoning

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) are currently debating the zoning of the opposition presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections. The ADC, represented by Abdullahi, has not officially taken a position on zoning but suggests that the party should prioritize candidates with the best chance of winning, favoring an open contest based on political strength and popular strategy over regional power-sharing considerations.

In contrast, the NNPP, led by its national public secretary, emphasizes the importance of zoning as a significant political factor, advocating for a consensus arrangement that reflects national acceptance and broader political sensitivities. The SDP, represented by its national chairman Shehu Gabam, acknowledges the legitimacy of zoning but notes that their final decision will depend on broader strategic calculations.

Gabam declined to commit to whether the SDP would formally join a coalition backing a single opposition candidate.
