Adeleke: Osun Election About Respecting Voter Rights

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke declared that the upcoming governorship election on August 15 is more than a contest for victory; it is a chance to convey a message to the All Progressives Congress (APC) about respecting the electorate. In a post on his X handle, Adeleke alleged that certain individuals have used their influence to punish the people of Osun for supporting him in the 2022 election.

He emphasized that the election should secure a decisive victory to affirm the people's democratic choices. This statement follows a dispute with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which imposed a Post-No-Debit restriction on the Osun State Government’s statutory allocation account just ten days before the election.

The EFCC stated it was investigating the state government for alleged fraudulent handling of funds totaling about N11 billion. Adeleke rejected the EFCC's claims, arguing that the freeze infringes on the constitutional rights of subnational governments and that no court order was obtained for the restriction.

He has instructed Attorney-General Oluwole Jimi-Bada to challenge the EFCC's action in the Federal High Court in Osogbo.
