Adeleke Wins Osun Gubernatorial Election Amid Tensions

Ademola Adeleke, the current governor of Osun State, won re-election in the gubernatorial election held on August 15, polling a total of 511,067 votes. His closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), received 444,815 votes.

The election was characterized by significant political tensions, described as a “perfect grudge match” between Adeleke and Adegboyega Oyetola, the former governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy. The campaign environment was fraught with violence, leading to a politically charged atmosphere in Osun State.

After being blocked from joining the APC, Adeleke contested under the Accord Party, which facilitated his victory. In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Channels TV, Adeleke expressed that his win represents a “victory for democracy.” His energetic dance moves during celebrations have become a notable aspect of his public persona, serving as a unique branding tool that conveys warmth and accessibility.
