Shettima Advocates for Africa's UN Security Council Inclusion

Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed that Africa's exclusion from permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council undermines the fairness and legitimacy of global governance. He made this statement during a meeting with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to supporting urgent reforms of the UN, emphasizing the need for international institutions to be more representative and responsive. He praised UN Secretary-General António Guterres for advocating a more representative Security Council and highlighted the injustice of a 21st-century Council lacking permanent African representation.

Shettima also commended Amina Mohammed for her contributions to multilateral diplomacy and sustainable development, asserting Nigeria's role as a dependable partner in addressing global issues such as hunger and violence. He concluded that the credibility of the international system relies on its ability to respond fairly to human suffering and provide all regions with a meaningful voice in global decision-making.
