Nigerian-Born Ahanor Receives Italy U21 Call-Up

Honest Ahanor, a Nigerian-born central defender, has been called up to the Italian U21 national team after securing an Italian passport. The Italian Football Federation made efforts to ensure his eligibility, as he is a graduate of Genoa's academy and was born in Aversa to Nigerian parents.

Ahanor, now 18 years old, has opted to represent Italy over Nigeria, citing a stronger personal connection to the country of his birth. He is among four newcomers in the squad named by U21 manager Silvio Baldini for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against North Macedonia on March 26 and Sweden on March 31.

Ahanor, who transferred to Atalanta last summer, has appeared in 28 matches, including 16 starts, for his club. His switch of allegiance to Italy will require FIFA approval, but he is set to debut alongside teammates such as Giovanni Daffara, Mattia Mannini, and Alessio Cacciamani.
