SSANU Receives 8 Months Salary Arrears from Government

The Federal Government has responded to pressure by releasing eight months’ salary arrears for the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). This decision came just two days after SSANU issued a 14-day ultimatum for the implementation of the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement.
The association emphasized the need for the swift release of funds and full payment of outstanding Consolidated University Teaching and Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTTA) arrears, which are calculated from January 1, 2026. SSANU warned that failure to comply within the stipulated time would lead to a “total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action.” However, the government acted quickly to release the funds in less than 48 hours to avert disruption of academic activities in Nigerian universities.
SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim confirmed the release, stating that it reflects the effectiveness of constructive engagement and prompt action in maintaining industrial harmony and ensuring workers’ welfare.
