Diri Advocates for Creation of More Ijaw States

On a recent occasion in Yenagoa, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State called for sustained agitation for the creation of two additional Ijaw states, emphasizing the need for unity among the Ijaw ethnic nation. He addressed the Ijaw Nation Congress, highlighting the importance of true fiscal federalism to ensure better development and control over resources.

Diri noted the current lopsided structure of the federation, which he described as a unitary system, and stressed the necessity for local resolutions to the challenges faced by the Ijaw people, including environmental degradation and infrastructural neglect. He acknowledged the resilience of the Ijaw people and urged them to prioritize collective interests over individual ambitions in the upcoming elections.

Diri commended the leadership of Prof. Benjamin Okaba and others for their efforts in advocating for the Ijaw nation, which he described as a crucial contributor to Nigeria's economy despite ongoing neglect.

The event included various dignitaries and emphasized the need for a strategic global engagement to amplify the Ijaw voice.
