FUNAAB VC Advocates for Agricultural Innovation in Nigeria

At the 9th Africa Agriculture Science Week and 10th FARA General Assembly in Abuja, Professor Olusola Babatunde Kehinde, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), stated that agricultural colleges and institutions are essential for food security, economic diversification, and job creation. He called for greater investment and collaboration to maximize the sector's potential.

Despite agriculture employing over 35% of Nigeria's workforce and significantly contributing to the GDP, challenges such as low productivity, post-harvest losses, climate variability, and limited mechanization persist. Professor Kehinde presented on agricultural innovations, highlighting FUNAAB's integrated model that combines teaching, research, extension services, and enterprise development.

The university has developed drought-resistant crop varieties and improved irrigation systems, increasing crop yields by 25-40% in pilot communities. Additionally, FUNAAB has made strides in agro-processing, producing various products that reduce post-harvest losses and support agro-based enterprises.

The Vice-Chancellor also mentioned youth empowerment initiatives through agripreneurship programs and partnerships.
