Akpabio Calls for Public Fund Protection and Media Integrity

Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, emphasized the importance of lawmakers protecting public funds during the 2026 Capacity-Building Workshop organized by the Senate Press Corps. He stated that the National Assembly has a duty to guard the public purse and urged journalists to enhance their understanding of the Constitution and parliamentary rules.

The workshop's theme was “Leveraging Legislative Oversight and Media Collaboration to Safeguard the National Budget from Unlawful Insertions,” highlighting the roles of legislative oversight and media in ensuring budget transparency. Represented by Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Akpabio stressed that both Parliament and the press must be accountable to the Nigerian people.

He encouraged journalists to be thorough in their reporting and to expose wrongdoing while avoiding unverified claims. The workshop featured presentations from key stakeholders, including Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Mr Oluseun Onigbinde, Mallam Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, and Mr Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, focusing on budget management and accountability.
