Akwa Ibom's Etoro Bassei Breaks 47-Year Tennis Jinx

Paul Bassei, the Commissioner for Sports in Akwa Ibom State, praised young tennis athlete Etoro Bassei for breaking a 47-year jinx by becoming the first girl from Akwa Ibom to win the CBN title. This commendation occurred during a reception for Etoro, who, alongside fellow athletes Wisdom Effiong, Favour Jame, and God’s Miracle Essien, returned with medals from national championships, including the ITF J30 Abuja and the Davnotch National Open Tennis Championship.

Bassei expressed delight in Etoro's performance, which has placed Akwa Ibom on the national tennis map and has allowed her to compete for world junior ranking points against peers from the USA, India, China, and Canada. He emphasized the importance of sports in the state, noting that Governor Umo Eno prioritizes sports development.

The CBN National Open Tennis Championship featured both young and senior athletes, with Etoro winning the ladies' singles championship and emerging as a finalist in the ladies' doubles.
