Akwa Ibom Police Deny Assault Claims at UUTH

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command issued a statement on May 12, 2026, denying allegations of police involvement in an assault on medical personnel at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH). The command clarified that the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to address economic and financial crimes.

The Chief Medical Director of UUTH had placed a distress call regarding armed men reportedly seen within the hospital premises. In response, the police deployed officers to assess the situation and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The command confirmed that the operation was conducted by EFCC personnel and advised the reopening of the hospital gates after ensuring the situation was safe. The police emphasized that their personnel did not participate in any assault or use of tear gas against hospital staff, labeling the online reports as false and misleading, which could create unnecessary tension among the public.
