Community Banishes Woman Accused of Witchcraft in Cross River

In Cross River State, a 60-year-old woman named Florenc Osang was banished from Abo Obisu Village by community leaders, accused of witchcraft linked to the death of 40-year-old Mose Mbia Tawo. The community leader, Frank Ulom Boki, imposed a fine of N350,000 on Osang for allegedly clearing farmland, which was believed to have contributed to Tawo's death.

After failing to pay the fine, Osang was summoned to the village center. A letter signed by Joseph Eyo, a solicitor for Osang, was sent to the National Human Rights Commission and the Department of Public Prosecution in Calabar, condemning the community's actions as a violation of her rights.

The letter described the treatment of Osang as inhumane and barbaric, highlighting the community's traditional practices. Osang has been left homeless and without means to support herself and her family.

Her legal representatives warned the community of potential legal consequences for their actions.
