NLC Demands More Allowance Hikes as FG Sets 2026 Date

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for additional increases in allowances for civil servants, citing that the current increment is inadequate to address the impact of inflation on workers' living conditions. The Federal Government has announced that the newly approved duty tour and estacode allowance review will take effect on October 1, 2026.

This review, communicated through a circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, outlines significant adjustments across various grade levels, particularly for senior officials. For instance, officials on grade levels 01 to 04 will receive N30,000, while those on grade levels 16 and 17 will earn N109,000.

The circular also details allowances for travel, training, and other professional development initiatives. Despite the adjustments, NLC General Secretary Benson Upah expressed that the increment is not sufficient to cushion the effects of inflation, indicating a need for broader interventions to improve worker welfare.
