Alumni Networks Essential for Job Market Access, Expert Says

During the 2026 Babcock University Alumni Association week held in Ogun State, Godwin Oyedokun, a professor at Babcock University, discussed the critical role of alumni networks in unlocking hidden job markets and promoting enterprise growth. He stated that strong alumni networks can enhance access to opportunities, strengthen innovation, and maintain global competitiveness.

Oyedokun advised that networking should not merely be viewed as a social activity but as a strategic tool for career advancement and entrepreneurship. He highlighted that success is increasingly dependent on professional relationships, which can provide access to information, mentorship, and funding.

Oyedokun noted that 20% of job opportunities are typically available through networks, while 80% are uncovered through trust referrals rather than public advertisements. He pointed out that weak alumni engagement and inadequate networking skills can limit professional opportunities, urging alumni to cultivate authentic, long-term relationships built on trust to maximize economic value.
