Amnesty International Exposes Police Torture in Imo State

Amnesty International released a report on Wednesday alleging severe human rights violations by the Imo State police unit, commonly referred to as "Tiger Base." The report indicates that this anti-kidnapping unit operates outside the law, engaging in systematic torture, extrajudicial killings, and extortion. Detainees are reportedly held in inhumane conditions, coerced into confessions, and often disappear without a trace.

Former detainees recounted experiences of severe beatings and torture, with some being shot and left with bullet wounds. The report highlights the overcrowded facilities, where up to 70 detainees are crammed into cells measuring 12 feet by 12 feet, lacking basic sanitation.

Amnesty International's Nigeria director, Isa Sanusi, emphasized that these abuses reflect a broader failure within Nigeria's law enforcement institutions. The report also mentions specific cases of alleged deaths in custody, including that of Okechukwu Ogbedagu in 2022, and calls for independent investigations into these allegations.
