Anambra Assembly Moves to Recall Suspended Lawmaker

The Anambra State House of Assembly has commenced a fresh process to potentially recall suspended lawmaker Bernard Udemezu, who represents the Ayamelum Constituency. His suspension originated in August 2025 following a social media post that accused the state legislature of neglecting his constituency.

The Assembly deemed the post damaging and a violation of internal conduct rules. Initially suspended for three months, Udemezu's suspension was extended for an additional three months due to his failure to comply with the Assembly's resolutions.

The second phase of his suspension began in November 2025 and is expected to conclude on February 26, 2026. During a plenary session on Tuesday, Speaker Somtochukwu Udez directed the Committee on Rules, Ethics, and Privileges to reassess Udemezu's case to determine if the conditions for his return have been met.

The committee, led by Ikenna Ofodem, is tasked with reporting back to the Assembly by the next adjournment date on February 19, 2026.
