Anambra First Lady Advocates for Women's Equality

On August 26, marking Women’s Equality Day, Chinwe Onuigbo, the First Lady of Anambra, called for equal opportunities for women in a statement made in Awka. She articulated that gender equality is about ensuring every woman and girl can learn, lead, work, dream, and thrive without limitations imposed by gender, culture, religion, or other social barriers.

Onuigbo stressed that empowering women strengthens families and communities and contributes to broader social development. She urged stakeholders to foster an environment where girls can pursue their aspirations and women can engage fully in leadership and decision-making roles.

Additionally, she called for greater recognition of women's contributions to society, emphasizing the need for spaces where their voices are heard and their potential is realized. The observance of Women’s Equality Day, which originated in the United States, serves as a platform to highlight women's access to education, economic opportunities, and participation in public life, and in Nigeria, it renews attention to barriers affecting women and girls.
