ANSIEC Confirms August 29, 2026 for Anambra LG Elections

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has affirmed that the local government elections will take place on August 29, 2026, despite a lawsuit filed by 56 serving councillors from all 21 local government areas in Anambra State. The councillors are contesting the legality of the elections, arguing that their tenure has not expired and that they are entitled to a four-year term from their swearing-in date.

This dispute arises from legislation enacted by the Anambra State House of Assembly, which stipulates a two-year tenure for local government officials. ANSIEC Chairman Mrs.

Genevieve Osakwe stated that the filing of a lawsuit does not automatically halt the electoral process and that the commission is actively preparing for a free and fair election. She emphasized that ANSIEC has not received any directive to suspend the electoral process and urged political parties to continue their preparations.

The commission is committed to conducting the elections in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022 and relevant state laws.
