Anambra Local Government Elections Set for August 29, 2026

On August 29, 2026, eligible voters in Anambra State will elect chairmen and councillors for the 21 local government areas. This election follows the successful governorship election eight months prior, where Prof Chukwuma Soludo was reelected.

The unwritten zoning system, initially established by former governor Mr Peter Obi, remains influential in determining political office rotations among the three senatorial zones. Prof Soludo has actively monitored adherence to this zoning during the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) primary elections held in February, ensuring that existing arrangements are respected and new ones are implemented.

The zoning system has been credited with reducing political violence and candidate multiplicity, fostering peace in the state. Proponents are now advocating for micro zoning to address perceived injustices and enhance development in underrepresented areas.

Public affairs analyst Mr Anayo Ezeigwe noted that the zoning arrangement has mitigated violent political practices and promoted equitable power sharing among the zones.
