ANSIEC: No Automatic Wins for Sole Candidates in Elections
The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) stated that there will be no automatic victory for sole chairmanship candidates in the local government elections set for Saturday, August 29, 2026. ANSIEC Commissioner for Information and Publicity, Sir Tony Chinedu, explained that even if only one candidate is contesting, they must secure at least two-thirds of the "Yes" votes to be declared elected.
If the predominant vote is "No," the election will be deemed inconclusive, and the process will restart from party primaries. For contested positions, the election will follow the normal voting procedure.
Chinedu noted that 22 candidates had been screened for 21 chairmanship positions, with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) fielding candidates for all positions and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) fielding one candidate. A total of 346 candidates were screened for 326 councillorship positions.
ANSIEC is reported to be over 90% ready for the polls, with all necessary preparations in place.
