APGA Dominates Anambra Local Government Elections 2026

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) achieved a significant victory in the Anambra local government elections held on August 29, 2026, securing all 21 chairmanship seats and 326 councillorship positions. Mrs. Chinelo Genevieve Osakwe, chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), announced the results on August 30, stating that the election was peaceful, free, fair, transparent, and credible.

Voting in 20 of the 21 local governments utilized a "Yes" or "No" format, with Anambra East being the exception, where APGA's candidate Ifeanyi Chinweze won with 50,169 votes against the YPP candidate's 1,658 votes. Newly elected chairmen praised the electoral process, with Ikechukwu Okeakpu from Njikoka LGA commending ANSIEC.

However, the YPP claimed they boycotted the election in Anambra East due to intimidation and lack of access to voting materials, alleging that gunshots were fired to intimidate their supporters, resulting in injuries to a female party member. ANSIEC did not address these allegations in its official declaration.
