Anambra State Seeks Pro Bono Lawyers for Inmates

The Anambra State Government has issued a public notice calling for legal practitioners to volunteer their services pro bono to assist indigent inmates facing criminal prosecution. This initiative, aimed at decongesting correctional centers and accelerating the dispensation of justice, was announced by the State Attorney General, Tobeckukwu Nweke SAN, on April 17.

The call for volunteers is part of the government's efforts to ensure that no individual is denied legal representation due to financial constraints. The initiative is facilitated under the provisions of Section 24 of the Office of Public Defender Law 2008, which allows for the engagement of external lawyers to provide free legal representation.

Interested legal practitioners are encouraged to register their interest at the Office of Public Defender located at the Old Government House in Awka, with contact details provided for further inquiries. This effort underscores the government's commitment to improving access to justice for all citizens.
