Anambra State to Abolish Development Levies and Commissions

The Anambra State government announced plans to eliminate development levies and the 10% commission that landlords charge tenants. This decision was made during a meeting aimed at regulating the housing sector and addressing the exploitation of tenants by landlords.

The government expressed concern over the abnormal rent increases, where landlords have raised rents from ₦1 million to ₦3 million without corresponding housing development. The government intends to implement legislation to protect both landlords and tenants, ensuring that any adjustments to rent are gradual and justified.

The Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), Anambra State chapter, was involved in discussions regarding these reforms. The government emphasized that it would no longer tolerate illegal collection of development levies, particularly in areas such as Okpoko, Obosi, and Oba.
