Army Disperses Students Protesting ASUU Strike in Ondo

Students at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State protested against the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which includes the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT). Armed soldiers in camouflage uniforms were deployed to disperse the protesters, who initially stood their ground, holding placards with messages like “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.” Despite the military presence, which reportedly involved gunshots and tear gas, students demanded the implementation of agreements with the unions and the payment of outstanding salary arrears.

Tolulope Adeyefa, the 18th General Secretary of the AAUA Students’ Union, condemned the military's actions, stating that the students were exercising their constitutional right to protest against the failure of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to resolve the ongoing strike. As of the report's filing, the Nigerian Army had not responded to the incident.
