Nigerian Army Probes Assault on UNIOSUN Students

The Nigerian Army has initiated a probe into allegations of assault on students of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) by its personnel. The incidents reportedly occurred on a Monday night when newly recruited soldiers invaded hostels, including Cristalag and King Queen hostels.

Allegations include sexual harassment of female students and physical assault of male students, with claims of valuables being stolen. Major Yahaya Ibrahim, from the Army's public relations office, stated that the Army's mandate is to protect citizens, particularly the youth.

Professor Clement Adebooy, the Vice Chancellor of UNIOSUN, condemned the incidents, describing them as inhumane and unacceptable. The situation escalated, prompting student protests on Tuesday demanding justice for their assaulted colleagues.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the soldiers' actions were violent and targeted, particularly against female students.
