NAWOJ Demands Action Against Army Personnel in Rape Case

The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called for the immediate dismissal and prosecution of Nigerian Army recruits allegedly involved in the rape of a female student at Osun State University, Osogbo. In a statement signed by Chairperson Comrade Abisola Ariwodola and Secretary Oluwaranti Ojewumi, NAWOJ condemned the incident as a serious case of sexual and gender-based violence.

They urged the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, to ensure that any recruits found culpable are summarily dismissed from military service in accordance with regulations. NAWOJ also demanded that the suspects be handed over to civil authorities for investigation and prosecution.

The association emphasized the need for medical, psychosocial, and legal support for the survivor and called for the protection of her safety against intimidation. They expressed disappointment that military personnel, who should protect women and children, are involved in such acts, and commended the efforts of Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooy, Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, in supporting affected students.
