Nigerian Aviation Faces Challenges Amid New Entrants

The Nigerian aviation sector is experiencing significant challenges as new airlines, including Xejet, ValueJet, Enugu Air, Green Africa, and Binani Air, join the domestic market. Captain Ibironk Rotimi Olajid highlighted that the demand for air travel has decreased, leading to a struggle for airlines to fill their aircraft.

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered travel habits, with many opting for virtual meetings instead of physical travel. Captain Hori Jaja expressed concerns about the shrinking passenger numbers, which could lead to increased competition and a price war among airlines.

This situation may force smaller carriers to merge with larger competitors to survive, resulting in fewer choices for passengers. Additionally, the financial strain may lead to reduced service quality and lower wages for airline employees.

Captain John Ojikutu emphasized the need for regulatory oversight by the NCAA to manage the market effectively and ensure profitability for airlines, as the industry grapples with a significant imbalance between supply and demand.
