Aso Villa to Exit National Grid by March 2026, Transitioning to Solar Power

The Permanent Secretary of the State House, Temitope Fashedemi, announced that Aso Villa in Abuja will disconnect from the national power grid by March 2026, completing its transition to solar power. The initiative, which began in late 2025 with the installation of solar infrastructure, aims to significantly reduce the government's electricity expenditure.

The State House Medical Center has been primarily running on solar energy since May 2025, minimizing reliance on diesel generators. The Federal Government allocated ₦10 billion in the 2025 budget and an additional ₦7 billion in the 2026 appropriation bill for the solar project.

Despite criticism questioning the rationale behind the move, top government officials, including Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, have defended the investment as sustainable. The transition to solar power is expected to save costs and align with global best practices.
