ASUU Opposes Federal Government's Course Scrapping Plan

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) issued a warning to the Federal Government of Nigeria regarding its plans to scrap certain university courses deemed irrelevant. During a press conference in Bauchi on Wednesday, Comrade Namo Timothy, the zonal coordinator of ASUU Bauchi Zone, criticized the government's recent pronouncement made on April 26, 2026, which aimed to phase out courses considered irrelevant to the country's economic future.

Timothy argued that every course within the university system is relevant and contributes to societal and economic development. He contested the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa's, assertion that the elimination of certain courses would align education with labor market demands.

ASUU maintains that the high unemployment rates among graduates cannot be solely attributed to the courses offered, and they reject any attempts to scrap academic programs. The union also expressed frustration over unresolved issues with the Federal Government, including withheld salaries and other financial disputes, warning that these issues could lead to industrial unrest.
