Atiku Abubakar: Economic Crisis Forces Youth to Sell Kidneys

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed grave concern over the economic hardship driving young Nigerians to sell their kidneys. In a post on X, he reported hearing "disturbing stories" of this trend as a desperate measure to raise money amid rising living costs attributed to President Bola Tinubu's economic policies.

Atiku stated that young Nigerians are reportedly selling their kidneys for as little as N1.7 million, a figure he did not source. He emphasized that young people should focus on building careers and pursuing dreams rather than resorting to such extreme measures for survival.

Atiku acknowledged existing laws against commercial organ sales but argued that legal frameworks alone cannot address the underlying poverty and desperation. He called for economic reforms that prioritize affordable living essentials, including food, transportation, healthcare, and job creation, to restore hope for the younger generation.
