NTI Launches Initiative to Professionalize Nigerian Teachers

The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) in Kaduna, under the leadership of Prof. Sadiya Sani Daura, has been mandated to coordinate the Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP), initiated by the Hon. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. The ATPP aims to professionalize non-professional teachers in Nigeria and address qualification gaps within the education system.

This initiative responds to concerns regarding teachers who are not licensed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). The NTI will collaborate with various educational bodies, including the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the TRCN, to implement the ATPP without removing these teachers from classrooms.

The program will offer two routes: a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for teachers with non-education degrees and a Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) for those from the National Diploma cadre. Both routes will utilize a blended learning approach, combining digital content with practical teaching experience verified in teachers' own schools.

The curriculum has been developed by a national panel of experts.
