FG Directs NTI to Professionalize 250,000 Teachers

The federal government has mandated the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) in Kaduna to coordinate the professionalization of 250,000 serving teachers who do not possess formal teaching qualifications. This directive was announced in a statement on Friday in Abuja by Dr. Iyela Ajaji, who is the Sub-Committee chairman on Media and Communication for the Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP) and also serves as the Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC).

The ATPP aims to provide structured, affordable, and time-bound routes for these teachers to obtain professional qualifications recognized by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). The initiative, overseen by Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, seeks to improve teacher quality across the nation without removing unqualified teachers from classrooms.

NTI, led by its director and chief executive, Prof. Sadiya Daura, will act as the Coordinating Secretariat and collaborate with various educational agencies, including UBEC, TRCN, NERDC, NSSEC, and NUC.
