Journalists Escape Mob Attack in Ebonyi During Coverage

On August 1, 2026, a team of journalists faced a mob attack in Idembia, Ezza South Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, while on assignment to cover the defection of Chief Ifeanyi Nworie from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The journalists were traveling in a branded official vehicle when they were ambushed by over 50 suspected political thugs, allegedly led by Barrister Friday Agbom.

The attackers vandalized the journalists' vehicle and attempted to gain entry, searching for fuel to potentially set it ablaze. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants remained at the event venue for hours, preventing guests from entering and attacking a passer-by.

The event was initially set to take place at the village square but was moved to the organizer's residence due to the disruption. Despite the presence of more than 20 armed police officers at the original venue, the program was ultimately disrupted.

Barrister Agbom questioned the journalists' presence at opposition events, and efforts to obtain comments from security authorities were ongoing.
