Austria Converts Hitler's Birthplace into Police Station

Austria has transformed Adolf Hitler's birthplace in Braunau am Inn into a police station, a move aimed at discouraging far-right extremist gatherings at the site. Sibyl Treiblmaier, a 53-year-old office assistant, noted that the government seeks to neutralize the location, which has been criticized for not fully acknowledging its role in the Holocaust.

The building, which has been in disrepair, was privatized following a law passed in 2016. The renovations are expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026, with an estimated cost of €20 million.

Ludwig Laher, a member of the Mauthausen Committee, emphasized the police's obligation to protect the state. Local shop owner Jasmin Stadler expressed support for contextualizing the site's history, while Wolfgang Leithner, an electrical engineer, hopes the police station will prevent the site from becoming a shrine for extremists.

The debate surrounding Austria's Holocaust history continues, with 65,000 Austrian Jews killed and 130,000 forced into exile during Nazi rule.
