UNILAG and Dundee Launch Joint LLM for Nigerian Lawyers

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Dundee have introduced the first joint Master of Laws (LLM) degree between a Nigerian and a UK university, aimed at enhancing the global competitiveness of Nigerian lawyers. Dayo Ayoade, Head of UNILAG’s Department of Jurisprudence and International Law and Professor of Energy, Extractives and Governance Law, stated that this initiative was conceived to provide Nigerian students with international legal education while remaining connected to their careers and national development.

Discussions for this collaboration began in 2019, following a successful joint legal training program. The formal agreement was signed in October 2025 by UNILAG's Vice-Chancellor, Prof.

Folasade Ogunsola, and Prof. Peter McLeivy from the University of Dundee at the British High Commission.

The program has already seen its first cohort complete the Nigerian phase of their studies before advancing to Scotland for further coursework and research, returning to Nigeria to finish their dissertations under joint supervision. Ayoade emphasized that this program is structured to strengthen Nigeria’s legal profession rather than facilitate migration.
