Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has disclosed that he relied on spiritual guidance when selecting Dr. Peter Akp to serve as his new deputy governor.
Akp was sworn in on February 25 following the December 11, 2025 death of former Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. During a thanksgiving service held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God regional headquarters in Yenagoa, Diri explained that the appointment process involved what he described as intense spiritual pressure that ultimately led to Akp's selection.
The governor characterised Akp as the suitable replacement for Ewhrudjakpo, emphasizing their close working relationship over nearly six years. Diri stated that divine direction during prayer sessions informed his choice, with guidance from religious leaders supporting the decision.
Chief Press Secretary Daniel Alabrah issued a statement on behalf of the governor confirming that God made Akp available to fill the vacancy left by the late deputy governor's passing. Akp used the same thanksgiving occasion to share details of his personal journey, recounting struggles from his childhood.
He described how his father once spent five hours seeking to secure N110 to cover school fees, illustrating the family's financial hardships during his education. Akp also referenced support from church members and relatives who contributed between N20 and N30 to help complete his schooling, framing his rise to public office as a reflection of biblical narratives about perseverance through adversity.
The deputy governor drew comparisons between his life trajectory and the biblical story of Jacob, suggesting his experiences mirror broader themes of struggle and divine favour. Church leadership and the governor's office both participated in highlighting Akp's background during the special service.
The thanksgiving event served as the official platform for both Diri and Akp to explain the circumstances surrounding the appointment to the state capital's residents.
