Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri says he experienced intense spiritual direction when selecting Dr. Peter Akp as deputy governor after Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo's death…

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has revealed that divine guidance played a central role in his choice to appoint Dr. Peter Akp as the new deputy governor.

Following the December 11, 2025 death of Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Akp took his oath of office on February 25, 2025, approximately two and a half months later. During a thanksgiving service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God's regional office on Sani Abacha Expressway in Yenagoa last Sunday, Diri outlined his selection process.

Throughout the appointment procedure, the governor encountered what he termed intense spiritual pressure—a form of divine direction that ultimately shaped his decision. Akp, a pastor in the RCCG, brought substantial professional qualifications to the role.

Over nearly six years, he had established a productive working relationship with the late Ewhrudjakpo. Diri characterized Akp as the right fit for filling the void left when his predecessor passed away.

Following constitutional procedures for deputy governor vacancies, Akp's nomination required legislative ratification before his swearing-in took place. Diri's account reflects how the governor integrated spiritual conviction alongside professional judgment when selecting someone for this senior executive post.
