Benue State Dismantles Over 20 Illegal Checkpoints

The Benue State Government has dismantled more than 20 illegal checkpoints along the Vandeikya-Konshisha road. This action was disclosed by Governor Joseph Har during a press briefing in Makurdi on Thursday.

The operation was carried out following an inspection tour of the area, which revealed the alarming presence of these unauthorized roadblocks. While three legitimate checkpoints operated by the Nigeria Police and community volunteer guards remain, the illegal checkpoints were reportedly established by youth groups and individuals who posed as officials, often extorting money from motorists and traders.

Governor Har described the situation as a needless burden on road users, leading to financial losses and wasted time for traders. He warned against the practice of erecting illegal checkpoints and urged residents to report any such cases to the appropriate authorities.
