ECOWAS Integration Weakened by Sahel Nations' Exit

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, stated that the formal withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in January 2025 has triggered a major regional crisis and weakened key mechanisms for regional integration. The three countries had announced their intention to leave ECOWAS in 2024 and subsequently formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

During a policy colloquium organized by the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, Dare emphasized that this exit blunted ECOWAS protocols aimed at promoting economic integration and the free movement of goods and services. He linked effective border management to economic integration and regional security, asserting that borders are crucial for maintaining stability.

Additionally, Dare dismissed claims regarding the closure of Nigeria's borders, clarifying that they are open but regulated. Gen Christopher Musa (retd.), Minister of Defence, reiterated the administration's commitment to national security under President Tinubu.
