Legal Battle Over Controversial Blue Silk Rank in Nigeria

The introduction of the blue silk rank, an alternative title for non-litigation lawyers in Nigeria, has led to significant controversy. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has rejected this rank, labeling it illegal, while the Association of Legislative Drafting Advocates of Nigeria (ALDRAP) argues that the silence of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), NBA, and the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) implies tacit approval.

ALDRAP has filed a suit at the Abuja Federal High Court, seeking to protect its members' rights against NBA's interference regarding the blue silk rank. A judgment is anticipated on January 27, 2026, which will address the NBA's authority over the rank, as it is not mentioned in the Legal Practitioners Act of 1962.

ALDRAP's Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Clinton Jaja, disclosed that the CJN, NBA, and LPPC failed to respond to their notification regarding the rank's introduction, which they argue constitutes acquiescence.

The blue silk rank is set to be recognized alongside the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) title.
