Court Rejects Proposal for New Legal Rank "Blue Silk"

On a recent ruling, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Jame Omotosho, dismissed a suit that sought to establish a new professional rank for legal practitioners, termed "blue silk." The suit was filed by Tony Jaja against the Nigerian Bar Association and the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC). The court held that the suit lacked merit, affirming that the SAN title is the only recognized rank for legal practitioners in Nigeria.

The court ruled that the argument presented did not support the law, emphasizing that the legal profession is regulated by statutory frameworks that cannot redefine individual private associations. Furthermore, the court stated that the freedom of association does not extend to creating a parallel professional rank outside the law.

The proposal for the blue silk rank was deemed to have no legal foundation and could not be recognized within Nigeria's legal system, leading to the dismissal of the claims.
