Boko Haram's Impact: 5,000 Schools Destroyed in Borno

Borno Governor Babagana Umara Zulum announced that the Boko Haram insurgency resulted in the destruction of more than 5,000 school structures in Borno, affecting approximately 2.2 million children who were out of school at the peak of the crisis. Speaking in Maiduguri during the commissioning of education and infrastructural development projects, Zulum noted that fewer than 500,000 children were enrolled at the height of the insurgency, with many educators losing their lives.
He emphasized that rebuilding the education sector involves more than just physical reconstruction; it also requires restoring access to education and rebuilding community confidence. Zulum's administration has invested N46.987 billion in basic and secondary education from 2025 to 2026, completing 136 projects.
Usable classrooms in public pre-primary and primary schools increased to 5,792, while functional senior secondary schools rose from 34 in 2019 to 129 in 2026. School enrolment grew from 766,551 in 2019 to 1,801,295 in 2026.
The governor also mentioned initiatives to integrate Islamic education with modern subjects and establish Digital Literacy and ICT Centres.
