Borno Governor: 70% Budget for Security, Humanitarian Needs

On Thursday, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum disclosed that security and humanitarian needs have accounted for approximately 70% of the state's budget over the last seven years. This statement was made during a meeting in Maiduguri with the United Nations Offer Support to the Borno Model and the Steering Committee of the UN Response to Mass Exits from Insurgency in North-East Nigeria Peacebuilding Fund projects.

Zulum attributed the significant expenditure to the effects of the Boko Haram insurgency, which necessitated spending on internally displaced persons, refugees, and community reconstruction. His administration has focused on rebuilding schools, health facilities, and markets while creating livelihood opportunities for those affected by the conflict.

Zulum urged development partners to prioritize long-term programs that integrate peace-building with economic development. He also called for improved coordination among development partners to ensure resources are directed to the most needy communities.

Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, echoed the need for ongoing international support to tackle Nigeria's humanitarian and development challenges.
