Lagos Bolt, Uber Drivers Strike for Better Conditions

Drivers for Bolt and Uber in Lagos commenced a three-day strike on Sunday, as announced by Mr. Steven Iwindoy, the public relations officer of the Amalgam Union.

The strike was prompted by concerns over poor working conditions and unsustainable fare structures that do not reflect the rising operational costs, including high fuel prices and inflation. Thousands of drivers are struggling to earn a sustainable income despite working long hours.

The union has outlined ten key demands to the ride-hailing companies and government authorities, including an immediate fare review to align with current fuel and maintenance costs, a reduction in commission percentages, and the introduction of a regulated minimum base fare. Additionally, the union seeks improvements in rider verification systems and emergency response mechanisms to enhance driver safety.

The strike will see drivers log off from the platforms, and the union remains open to dialogue with the government and regulatory agencies to resolve these issues.
