Uber Engages Lagos Drivers Amid Ongoing Strike Action

Uber Technologies is currently engaged in dialogue with drivers in Lagos, Nigeria, who have been on strike since Monday due to rising operational costs, low fares, and poor working conditions. The strike, which continued into Tuesday and Wednesday, has disrupted ride-hailing services across the city and affected platforms including Uber, Bolt, and Indrive.

Union leaders are demanding higher fares, reduced commission charges, and improved protections for drivers. This is not the first instance of industrial action by drivers in Lagos, as previous strikes have also been prompted by similar grievances.

Uber began operations in Nigeria in 2014 and has since expanded to cities like Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan, becoming a major player in the ride-hailing sector. According to Uber's 2023 economic impact report, drivers are estimated to earn an additional N6.1 billion annually through the platform.

The company emphasizes its commitment to balancing the interests of drivers and riders while monitoring local market conditions.
