DSS Arrests Ex-Senator Aliyu Gebi for False Intel

The Department of State Services (DSS) arrested former Senator Aliyu Gebi for allegedly disseminating misleading security intelligence to foreign embassies. This incident raised concerns within diplomatic circles regarding Nigeria's international image.

Gebi, who represented the 7th National Assembly and worked with a private security consultancy, was arrested on Friday, April 3, following a week of monitoring his activities. He is currently out on bail but remains under close watch as investigations continue.

Reports indicate that Gebi forwarded inaccurate intelligence to foreign missions, which could incite panic and portray a dire security situation in Nigeria, particularly in the aviation sector. This misinformation led to reactions from international stakeholders, including flight cancellations by Germany's Lufthansa and similar considerations by British Airways.

The U.S. government issued a travel advisory warning its citizens of security risks in Nigeria, urging non-essential staff to leave. Nigerian authorities have pushed back against claims of exaggeration, asserting that security challenges are improving.
