Opposition Summit in Abuja Aims for Unity Ahead of 2027

The First National Opposition Summit, organized by civil society group G100 and the Minority Caucus, took place on Monday in Abuja at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre, aiming to create a unified opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Notably absent were prominent figures such as former Vice President of the African Democratic Congress Peter Obi, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, with no explanations provided by their parties.

Six political parties, including the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), attended the summit. G100 Director-General Salihu Mohd Lukman emphasized the need for unity to counter the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The attending parties signed a communiqué committing to a formal negotiation process, establishing a Central Leadership Committee, a Publicity and Communication Committee, and a Legal Committee, along with five working groups tasked with drafting key documents within 30 days.
